original date: 30 Jul 2001 Hi to all Sounds like you are all well and as busy as ever. ... I plan to work with a few of my advanced students on this project starting in September. I agree some images sent around would be a useful start. Cheers to all with a glass of wine. Take care, Georgette

original date: 27 Sep 2001 Okay all, My students and I will have finished putting together our package that represents our space/place by next Tuesday, when I will package them up and send them. Included will be nine slides, and various printed materials. I have scheduled that they will begin this project in about one month, so I am hoping that others will put together packages too. We also have some digital photos of our lab, which we will send to everyone on line, as soon as I can get someone to show me how to do this. Antje, I know that you have started with your students, so can you give us a little background. I also know that Janet can't really begin until the spring, but Georgette said it was fine for this semester. So, what I would like from all of you, is the exact address where we should send this stuff. Please get back to me as soon as possible, so we can finish this part of our responsibilities. Hope everyone is doing well. Things have been really topsy turvy. (Antje - that means - kunterbund durch einander von oben bis unten-) My address for sending stuff is: (you can also send things over the internet, since I have a student who is knowledgable about downloadingstuff). Suzanne Wolfe Department of Art University of Hawai'i at Manoa 2535 McCarthy Mall Honolulu, Hawaiti 96822 USA Regards and aloha, Suzanne

original date: 03 Oct 2001 Hi All, We have taken some digitals of our lab, and will be sending those to all of you this week. Our package is a bit delayed, and will go outnext Monday. Have not heard from Antje and Janet, but will hope to get materials from SOMEONE so that my class can begin to do their thinking about the idea. I do have Antjets brochure, but would like something more encompassing about her space/place. I have a student who is a computer whiz, says it is a piece of cake to do a web site. We will also do some more digitals of places other than the lab. Hope everyone is fine. Are we meeting in Kansas City? Suzanne

A original date: 31 Oct 2001 Dear colleagues in clay, I just returned from a late space between meeting and want to give you a little report: At first Suzanne: We thank you and your students very much for the photos - there are at the otherwise still pretty empty pinwall! Susanne (student) promised me to send photos this week to you all per email (I gave her your addresses - is that ok?), they want to know about Australia, they have an imagination of Ann Arbor. I gave out the project for all ceramic students, and voluntary they are now 10 students participating besides their own tasks or aims. . Only in the third ac. year I suggested to take it as the main subject, because I usually work in that academic year thematicly, conceptionally. They are now students between the third and fourth year (you know we have six years). In the first meeting the main voice was, that the topic is to large, to wide and needs to be specialized. I introduced and tried to animate...and spoke about the special need for ceramics and ceramists to find together in the world as outsiders in the artists institutions and interpretation. (You know my niche theories) We pointed out that the niche of the ceramics is the globe now - the space between Honolulu and Germany or Australia and Germany is in fact the world... Very proud students about this idea, feeling... I did not focus or specialize the topic myself, but I asked the students to look for their individual entry into the theme. Today brainstorming, lots of ideas between philosophy and the pots. Some . of the individual ideas: Nikolaus: space like cocoons or eggs, not like the local space between but more like a place between in development. Space between : stadium, stage, level between Joerg: The relation between person A and person B, example for that the SMS (May be the message "Do not leave me") in digital version (1 or 0) , sounds like a installation Jule: ways and travelling moving from Place A to place B, a lot (to much) ideas , some ideas in clay, all the wide research on paper, I suggested to make besides a leporello (endless paper folding) Susanne: more telling something, stories in architectural spaces (thrown town surrounding...) Anja: Moments of falling or flying Elke: collecting the structures of tiles, stones and so on, the grafics of joints, seams, grooves. Ina: phantasy, poetic drawings or painting in a surreal world, out of special religion or mythology, finding the no-real-world. Dagmar: couples (pairs) with a important space between (More than two single is the couple because of the tension, stress, voltage between the parts) more abstract Joerg: vessel sculptures Pauline: abstract form problem, may be paper works Kordula: the night is the space between, individual interpretation; time between We also brainstormed for ideas of collaboration between all of us and between the Halle group. We will collect photos of spaces between (three dimensional), literature... We spoke about labyrinth's as a very special space between, may be we make something together about that I tried to focus ideas, where really the space between plays a important or main part (like the German wall, borders at all, brakes in the music, wounds, the space between plus and minus in electricity and in the nuclear elements...) That is very hard to find out , we reached at last the point, that life is a place between birth and death or the personal life between the long story of mankind... May be you and your students have other ideas for that research.(main part has the space between) So you see it was a nice long evening, not very special but inspired, the topic started to be an important question. Lot of ideas to throw away, good for discussion. Ideas of collaboration: You can send all - important or not so important news via email. I wish to encourage the students to contact each other directly. If Somebody opens his idea for collaboration, he sends it and may be it grows to a long-distance collaboration. When we will have more visual results, we can rent a chatroom, at first internal, later public. Warning for long breaks. The international feeling is a potent source of engagement. The different school holidays are brake enough. We try to have ready results in the beginning of June, what about you? The exhibition at four places in the world was a good experience - original pieces in the home place, slides or other reproductions at the other three places I wish to have you three here to a final workshop next fall or later, tell me please your timetable! I try to get money, no school money, but, when we have a solid international conception, a written and signed appointment, I think, I can get German money, if not all culture money will be shorted for army and police... Sorry for the late night English without dictionary I look forward to hear from you and about your ideas. Take care for you and keep your private space between.

original date: 15 Nov 2001 Hi to all out there in this crazy global time I have not been able to get the space between started this semester for various reasons. September was really a month of hell here as so many folks have NYC connections. So the students mostly had a very slow start. Then many wanted to do thematic work related to the terrorism and political climate. I suppose I could have pushed this to connect with the space between but I was in a strange place as well, partly because of the political climate which seemed like "taw @!#$, here we go again" and "I hope the US does not do something stupid" etc. And of course I have been continuing my own personal healing process which is light years thru the tunnel from last March at NCECA but still takes on some bumps and inconsistencies. So my plan is to recruit students for the winter term to work on this project. Thanks for all the images, Suzanne and Antje. I hope having them in hand here will help in getting our contribution going. Antje, your idea to have us all there is wonderful and quite generous as it will take a lot of work on your part. September - December, of course, is exactly our fall semester dates. It would be difficult to get away for 8 weeks and still have a job. But maybe we can brainstorm possibilities. It seems like we had tremendous difficulties finding common time and place when we talked about this last time. Antje, of course, I will be glad to help with any English language needs. You are definitely the one who has the language burden in this group. My School of Art and Design is finally with a full time web director and we are in the process of really making a fine website. So with a little patience, this will be quite useful for our project. Maybe we need to make up an academic sounding name for our group for grant purposes but still remain AKA (also known as) the Garlic Girls. More later Georgette
