Much of my work is lead not only by subject but also by my interest, involvement and curiosity relating to the material and processes I use. The ideas a material or process can offer works hand in hand with the conceptual aspect of my work. It is for this reason I have chosen look at two aspects for my honours studio. One of these investigations is material : specifically glaze and the second is the conceptual that gives my material interest meaning. I'm interested in using a functional format to investigate concepts of interior. My time and exchange in China Japan and Korea lead me to be more aware of the various rituals and cultural approaches allowed me to become more interested in the conceptual basis of drinking tea and the experience of this. My attention was also drawn to the various physical aspects of tea that I usually did not notice or wasn't previously exposed to. I was interested in the interior of the bowl as well as the bowl itself. I was inspired watching the expansion of tealeaves, or watching the flowers float in the tea cup or tea pot. This exposure has lead me to investigate properties about that which fills space. As I have begun creating some of these forms I have become aware of the confusion created as interior form suddenly becomes exterior , positive negative and the possibilities with glaze as form rather than surface finish.
